Love Across Borders: Gabriela & Rasmus on blending cultures and building connection
As part of our Love Across Borders series, we're highlighting real couples navigating life and love across countries and cultures. Read on to discover how Gabriela from Brazil and Rasmus from Denmark built a peaceful, multicultural relationship in Berlin.
Some love stories begin with a Hollywood-worthy spark, but the deepest and most sincere romances often unfold slowly, unexpectedly, and beautifully. Gabriela and Rasmus met on a dating app in Berlin, both open to connection, but not necessarily expecting much, as many of us who have been trained by the modern dating scene can understand. However, what they found was a rare kind of bond. Conversations flowed, laughter came quickly, and the pace between them felt natural. Two years later, they’ve built a life that reflects not only their relationship, but a broader shared understanding of what home, partnership, and belonging can look like.
Humour and honest conversation help give this couple a strong connection to face life together.
Blending cultures and creating understanding across languages
Gabriela, originally from Brazil, and Rasmus, from Denmark, often joke about how their personalities have blurred cultural lines. “I’m a very Danish Brazilian, and Rasmus is a very Brazilian Dane,” Gabriela says. “He loves the sun, football, and cold beer. I love winter layers and cozy cafés.” Their banter is light, but it also speaks to a deeper truth: both partners have been willing to meet in the middle, to learn from and absorb parts of each other’s world.
Language is fluid in their home; they speak a mix of English, German, Portuguese, and Danish, sometimes even within a single conversation. “Rasmus mostly curses in Portuguese,” Gabriela laughs, “and I mostly curse in Danish.” The dynamic, multilingual atmosphere isn’t about perfection; it’s about connection and identifying the ways of communication that work best for them as a couple.
A grounded partnership
What stands out most about Gabriela and Rasmus is how they function as a pair. There’s no performance in their relationship, and no rush to prove or achieve. They describe themselves as "shapeshifters," adaptable and relaxed, and their focus is on presence rather than pressure. “We’re not too concerned with where we’re going,” they explain. “We try to stay in the now.”
Their home life includes beloved pets (special mention to Judith, Veronika, and Boris), shared routines, and the comfort of knowing they’re both committed to creating something grounded. It’s a relationship built on mutual respect, humour, and a kind of strength that doesn’t need to be loud to be lasting.
Ready to support each other no matter what comes, Gabriela & Rasmus are excited for what’s next.
Looking ahead
Their plans for the future reflect the same balance of intention and openness. In 2027, they hope to take a gap year to travel through Southeast Asia while Gabriela completes her psychology degree. They also imagine opening a business together someday - one that allows more flexibility in how and where they live.
“I think our biggest shared life goal is to build a life where we can enjoy peace of mind and adventures together,” says Gabriela. “That’s broad enough to encompass the world. To put it another way: we’re a boat waiting to sail away - we just know we’re leaving the port, but have no idea where we are anchoring next.”
Their advice for other intercultural couples?
Stay curious and listen.
“A culture isn’t a fixed stereotype, it’s a mix,” they say. “You can always find like-minded people, even in places that feel far from home. Stay curious. Stay open-hearted. And listen, especially when you don’t understand each other right away.”
